To prove the reliability of the on-track wheel fla To prove the reliability of the on-track wheel flange sensors and controller used in the Wireless Level Crossing (WLX) System and prove SIL 3 compliance requires rigorous testing in all conditions. Here we see the test track which has been set up at our East Lidcombe factory, that comprises 8 metres of 53kg track and a trolley with a single flanged train wheel that passes directly over the two WLX wheel flange sensors. It is planned that this test will run to 1 million cycles over a four-month period.

Aldridge supplies programmable Smart Signals for t Aldridge supplies programmable Smart Signals for the Sydney Metro. In 2019 the North West section of the Sydney Metro Rail line was completed, which features driverless trains from Chatswood (an inner Sydney suburb) to Cudgeong, which is the terminating marshalling area that’s 40km from Chatswood. And it has just been confirmed that Aldridge will be supplying additional smart signals for the Sydney Metro South Project, which extends the existing North West Metro a further 23km, from Chatswood to Bankstown.
Although the trains are driverless and the Metro is fully automated with a control centre located in Rouse Hill, the system still requires the installation of Railway Signals for the purpose of manual operations including shunting.
The signals are fully operational whenever the Metro is operating so commuters can observe the mainline signal operation from the leading carriage.
The first stage of the project required 153 signals which included 55 smart running, 26 smart shunting and 72 buffer stop signals, all of which were custom designed by Aldridge for the system.
The smart running signals are based on a European design which includes a white Points Position Indicator (PPI), indicating proceed Left, Straight Ahead or Right, plus a Red Horizontal Bar for Stop.
The smart shunting signals also display the Main Route Indicator (MRI) number immediately above the PPI with the upper MRI and lower PPI being totally separate & electrically isolated signals.
The two-digit route number displayed on the upper is a descriptive number which informs the train driver which destination the points arrangement will take him to. This can be programmed to display any two-digit (alphanumeric) combination and can be programmed from the rail operator’s control centre.

This is a demonstration of the Aldridge ITS Wirele This is a demonstration of the Aldridge ITS Wireless Level Crossing which is undergoing testing at an actual site near Maitland NSW. The WLX is actually undergoing testing at a remote site in the upper Hunter Valley in NSW on a mixed freight and passenger line. The whole system comprises a Wheel Flange Sensor, a Strike-in Slave Unit, a Repeater Unit and a Slave Warning Unit (comprising bell and warning lights), the system has now been in operation since early October 2019 with the trial due to conclude in 2020.The WLX units at the three waypoints all communicate with each other using two channel, encrypted radio signals with low power frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology. The site runs on 12V DC and is independently powered by solar panels which are supported by battery back-up. Because the site is connected to the internet via 3G/4G, our engineering team is able to remotely monitor its operation in real-time from Sydney with full access to a range of site diagnostics.
